What a beautiful gift, and memory. I can't find the quote, but I recall that Diane von Furstenberg, whose mother was a survivor of the Shoah and had lost everything in the war, said that her mother taught her that good times and travel were far more important than things. The cherished memories are something no one can take away from you.

What a fabulous gift Ollie! My children's paternal Grandmother gave all her grandchildren (5) a gift of money on the understanding they use it to go to Outward Bound when they were old enough [https://www.outwardbound.co.nz/courses/classic/]. My son did it in the long break at the end of his first year at University just after he had turned 18. He gained a huge amount from it in terms of personal growth. Our daughter wasn't so keen. At that time she wasn't the hiking, sailing, abseiling sort. She managed to persuade Grandma to let her buy a horse instead. Two other granddaughters did do the course and the other grandson used the money to go overseas and got into trouble with Grandma for not checking in first.

Well Jane, I was most grateful for the trip and my eyes still remember the beauty. Your Mother was right, travel. I was once told you can get your knowledge from reading and studying or if that wasn't your ( Like it wasn't mine) then travel is the best education you can get. Seeing and meeting the people of the countries is amazing and teaches us if we listen and understand them, more then books in school can offer. Those days are soon to be gone Jane. The world is a changing so fast and the wonderful older folks I use to sit and talk with are far gone, and the ones getting up in their age today don't have the same stories. Thank goodness for Substack and Genealogy, it can keep the best memories alive, Respectfully, Ollie G
